(position typically requires 2 to 5 years relevant experience)
Would you like to shape the future of transportation by developing new autonomous vehicle and machine solutions? If you are tired of sitting at your desk and would like to spend more time with hands-on installations and troubleshooting in a vehicle, then you are very welcome to apply for this position!
Who are we? Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) is a brand-new entity within the Volvo Group with the mission to offer transport solutions never seen before. We accelerate the development, commercialization, and sales of autonomous transport solutions, focusing on defined segments for the on- and off-road space. With entirely new business models and advanced technology, we will meet and exceed expectations from customers and contributing to a society that we want to live in. We are yet a small but passionate and effective team that is stronger than the sum of its parts and ready to tackle the big challenges we have ahead of us. We are now looking for innovative, committed individuals to join us in our endeavor to create customer solutions that enhance safety, flexibility and productivity.
The Vehicle team within the technology organization is responsible for vehicles, machines, trailers and safety systems in V.A.S. autonomous customer solutions. We take part in all life cycle phases, from the early specification and development phases throughout the maintenance and quality phases during customer operation. We interact closely with colleagues in Group Trucks Technology (GTT) & Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) to secure base vehicle and machine readiness. We then develop and integrate the on-board autonomous driving systems and the off-board safety systems. It is our responsibility to ensure that the vehicles and machines can be operated by the autonomous driving system in a good and safe manner.
Now, we are looking for an engineer that doesn’t like to sit still at a desk all day long but prefers to climb on a vehicle to install sensors and cables and verify their functionalities.
Position description As hardware engineer you will work together with other talented engineers in the Concept Vehicle Lab with early-stage concepts and prototypes.
You’ll be responsible for the integration and installation of the automation kit (such as e.g. sensors, actuators, ECUs, computers, brackets and harnesses) on targeted solutions. Sometimes you’ll have to manufacture the prototype yourself, from cutting and bending brackets, to building a complete wire harness. Other times you will support with fault tracing, software installation and hardware knowledge.
This position evolves over time: you can learn and develop new competencies and expect to have different tasks every day, depending on the phase of the project we are working on.
The Concept Vehicle Lab is equipped with high-end machinery for mechanical prototype manufacturing, 3D printing and electrical work, and we expect you to participate and contribute to the continuous improvement of our way of working.
You can look forward to an inspiring journey together with enthusiastic and professional colleagues throughout the Volvo Group organization.
Qualifications We believe that you are the kind of engineer that not only have great strive for developing and understanding new technologies, but also wants to realize ideas by hands-on work in a workshop environment. It is important that you can work autonomously without many instructions.
Building a prototype is a team effort, therefore your solution-oriented mindset and your will to collaborate will be a strong asset for this role.
Other requirements that we see as beneficiary for the role are:
• Practice of hands-on work with vehicles (preferably trucks)
• Familiarity with mechanical manufacturing, e.g. CNC machinery and tools
• Experience in fault tracing of the vehicle electrical systems
• Ability to communicate both in Swedish and English
• Driving license C and CE
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent
We are actively working to establish teams that will take maximum advantage of the strength inherent to differences in knowledge, experience, age, gender and nationality, among others. We find that well balanced work teams increase group dynamics, creativity and new approaches to solutions.
